Law and Order SVU star returning to the show for season 23 finale

The season 23 finale of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is bringing back a familiar face.

The Wrap has confirmed that Raúl Esparza will reprise his role as attorney Rafael Barba in the episode, which will air on May 19.

The episode will see Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) ask for his help when a victim of domestic violence (played by My Boys star Jordana Spiro) is prosecuted.

Esparza first appeared in SUV in season 14, becoming a series regular in season 15 before departing the show in season 19.

He was last seen in season 23, episode 9, ‘The People Vs. Richard Wheatley’, defending crime lord Richard Wheatley (played by Dylan McDermott) for the murder of Kathy Stabler.

Barba deadlocked the jury, resulting in a mistrial, and angering Olivia (Mariska Hargitay), who had begged him not to take the case.

Before series 23 ends, Law & Order: SVU will also see the return of Demore Barnes as Chief Christian Garland.

Barnes joined the series in season 21 before becoming a regular the following season. But his character left in last year’s season 23 premiere after being shut out by Chief McGrath (Terry Serpico) over speaking up on police misconduct.

Confirming his return to the show on Instagram last month, Barnes posted a photo from the set with the caption: “What? You didn’t think there’d be an encore? #svu #christiangarland #notallheroeswearcapes #seeyousoon.”

Barnes’ exit from the show was sudden, with the actor admitting on Instagram afterwards that he didn’t “totally know why this has happened”.

However, he added that he was “so very proud to have played the first Black deputy chief in SVU history”.

Law & Order: SVU airs Thursdays on NBC in the US. The show airs on Sky Witness in the UK, with select episodes available on NOW.
