Law & Order has been revived for its 21st season, 12 years after it was last on the air, with a mix of new and returning cast members.
One of those returning cast members is Anthony Anderson, who played Detective Kevin Bernard for the final few years of the original run. While he wasn’t one of the longest serving actors on the show, Anderson clearly loved his time there, as he revealed that he approached creator Dick Wolf about reprising his role for the new episodes.
Speaking to People (The TV Show!), the actor said: “We were, you know, we were two weeks out from ending our show Black-ish. They made the announcement that Law & Order was coming back. So, I picked up the phone and called Dick Wolf up and said, ‘Hey Dick, is it true?’

“He said, ‘It is.’ I was like, ‘Well, you know, I’m a free agent as of November 19,’ and [Dick] was like, ‘Anthony, you have no idea how happy this phone call makes me.'”
Wolf previously stated that the series is like good old comfort food, and therefore he sees no reason to try and change up the established formula for the sake of it.
“There’s really nothing to fix, we just want to continue telling great stories. Casting as always will be three cops and three DAs,” he said while speaking to Variety last year.

“We always approach storytelling the same way: Good writing, acting and production values, and give the viewers what they want. That’s been our mantra from day one.”
Meanwhile, the big revival has also cast one of the stars of Hannibal as a new character.
Law & Order season 21 airs on NBC. Law & Order: SVU airs Thursdays on NBC in the US. The show airs on Sky Witness in the UK, with select episodes available on NOW.
