Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is set to see the return of Demore Barnes as Deputy Chief Christian Garland.
The character only joined the series back in season 21 before becoming a regular the following season, though left in last year’s season 23 premiere after being shut out by Chief McGrath (Terry Serpico) over speaking up on police misconduct.
According to Give Me My Remote, however, Garland will be seen again in an upcoming episode of the show – though further details remain under wraps.
Barnes’ exit from the show was rather sudden, with the actor himself admitting on Instagram afterwards that he didn’t “totally know why this has happened”.
However, he said he was “so very proud to have played the first Black deputy chief in SVU history”.
Barnes added of his wish to see more diverse stories on screen: “I hope Wolf Entertainment’s leadership in giving me opportunity to amplify vital voice and story will result in many studios continuing to open doors of opportunity for others to do the same.
“This must continue. So please, everyone, continue to do your part to support change and amplify the voices and stories that injustice, in its many forms, seeks to silence. Chief Garland and I would not have it any other way.”

Barnes exit from SVU came at the same time as Jamie Gray Hyder (Kat Tamin), who also suggested it wasn’t her choice to be departing.
“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm Kat’s departure from the squad room,” she said on Instagram. “The decision was made above my pay grade, and wouldn’t have been my choice, but hey – that’s show biz for ya.
“To anyone who felt represented by any part of Kat’s being or mission, please know that you will always have representation in me. Thank you to the SVUniverse for welcoming me with open arms. It’s been an experience that I have grown from greatly, and will never forget.”
Law & Order: SVU airs Thursdays on NBC in the US. The show airs on Sky Witness in the UK, with select episodes available on NOW.
